We are DOOMED? Looks BAD Folks!Unfall mit Ikarus C42: Gefangen in der Umkehr-FalleLiam Mcintyre Song LyricsSubalpine forests worldwide face the synergistic threats of global warming and increased biotic attack, and the collapse or transition of subalpine forests is predicted in south-eastern Australia under future climates. The recent widespread dieback of subalpine snow gum forests due to increased activity of a native wood-boring longicorn beetle suggests this process may already be underway. We investigated how variation in tree tissue traits and environmental conditions correlated with elevation-dependent spatial patterns of forest mortality. We hypothesised that increased vulnerability of subalpine snow gums to wood-borer-mediated dieback at intermediate elevations was associated with poorly-resolved differences in traits between montane ( Eucalyptus pauciflora subsp. pauciflora) and subalpine ( E. pauciflora subsp. niphophila) snow-gum subspecies. We first sought to characterise variation and elevation-dependent transitions in 20 structural and drought-related functional traits among 120 healthy trees distributed along a 1000m elevation transect which spanned the subspecies transition zone. Secondly, we surveyed 774 trees across 53 sites between 1280-1980m asl. to explore associations between borer-damage severity, elevation, subspecies, and a subset of traits that differed between subspecies. These snow-gum subspecies exhibited mean differences and/or divergent elevation responses in 25% of traits surveyed, indicating contrasting suites of traits between montane and subal...

5. Suffering without Remedy: The Medically Unexplained Symptoms ...
Medicine looks for solutions in women's individual bodies and minds and not in the broad gendered malaise of the social body (Richie 2019). Medicalization ...
The term “Medically Unexplained Symptoms” (MUS) describes chronic symptoms for which medical investigations fail to reveal a specific pathology or biomarker. Even as MUS are among the most prevalent chronic health problems in the global north, patients who experience them reside in a nebulous space. Such nebulousness is heightened for women patients. Moreover, women report MUS at higher rates than men. In this review essay, we analyze the medicalization and feminization processes vis-à-vis MUS by focusing on two particular syndromes: Fibromyalgia (FMS) and Long COVID (LC). FMS and LC present clear parallels that allow us to trace an unhappy marriage of women and MUS. We demonstrate how the medical constructions of these two syndromes as knowledge categories are representations of medical uncertainty vis-a-vis women patients. We then scrutinize the resulting gendered consequences of these categories for the illness experience. We conclude our review by calling for a cultural reorientation in our thinking about MUS that centers a recognition that the origins and manifestations of a great deal of human suffering reside outside of medicine’s ways of knowing. In so doing, we connect to foundational claims in medical anthropology and sociology; namely, that illness is more than disease, and health cannot be achieved primarily via biomedical means.

10. Platform Worker Organising at Deliveroo in the UK: From Wildcat ...
Jan 5, 2022 · There has been debate in the literature about the legal status and the use of self-employment to engage workers (Aloisi, 2016; De Stefano, 2019) ...
Abstract It has been five years since the first strikes of Deliveroo workers in London in 2016. Since then, workers have continued to organise. The campaigns have involved five different aspects: first, wildcat strike action; second, networks and internationalisation; third, union organising with the Independent Workers Union of Great Britain (iwgb); fourth, legal campaigning; and fifth, wider leverage campaigns. What is less understood so far is the different strengths and weaknesses of these aspects, and how they have contributed to the build of workers’ self-organisation and power at Deliveroo. This article explores the different aspects and considers the effectiveness of each. It concludes by considering what can be learned from these struggles for the understanding of platform work and trade union organising today.
